The Boston Seminar
Reaching out to Dutch Academics in the Northeast of the USA
In this day and age, science is an international enterprise. Centres of excellence attract scholars from all over the world. Accordingly, a considerable number of Dutch scholars and students have settled down in the American northeast, home to the most prestigious cluster of academic institutions worldwide. The Dutch presence at this very pinnacle of science is a source of pride. As a potential resource, it has, until now, been insufficiently appreciated.
We would like to thank all attendees for their participation in the Boston Seminar. You can find the photos of the seminar on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1629929@N24/
Seminar
The Boston Seminar is a unique opportunity for Dutch academics in the USA and leading policy makers and academics in the Netherlands to exchange views and experiences on Dutch and American higher education models and related topics. In addition, it will mark the establishment of a network connecting the Dutch academic community in the Northeast of the USA. The seminar takes place on April 8 and April 9, 2011 and is organized by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York in association with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, and the Netherland-America Foundation.
Program overview
The first day will consist of two plenary sessions devoted to the Dutch and American Academic models. On the second day multiple working groups will focus on specific topics, such as innovation in education, studying in the US, and the commercialization of research results. Participants will include Halbe Zijlstra (State secretary of Education, Culture and Science), Alexander Rinnooy Kan (SER), Sijbolt Noorda (VSNU), Ian Buruma (Bard College), Jos Engelen (NWO), Eric Mazur (Harvard), James Kennedy (UvA), and many others. Look here for our full program.
Practical information
The seminar will be a limited space event for 120 participants. The seminar is primarily aimed at Dutch scholars and students in the (northeast of the) United States and policymakers and scholars from The Netherlands, but is open to others as well within the limitations of the conference space. Since many conferences are being held in the Boston Area in April, we strongly advice you to reserve a hotel room in time.
