(New York City) – As cities along the east coast recover from flooding caused by hurricane Irene and tropical storm Lee, Dutch Delta Commissioner Wim Kuijken will visit New York City September 15 and 16th to meet with local, state and national water management officials
Delta Commissioner Kuijken will meet with representatives such as Amanda Burden (City Planning Commission and Department of City Planning) and Chris Ward (Port Authority of New York and New Jersey). They will discuss how the Netherlands and New York are tackling flooding risks to urban areas. As part of his visit, Delta Commissioner Kuijken and Chris Ward will survey the Brooklyn Waterfront by boat on September 16th.
The boat trip will take Delta Commissioner Kuijken, members of Waterfront Vision 2020 and Chris Ward to Governors Island via Brooklyn Bridge Park. On Governors Island presentations will be held by Leslie Koch and Simon Bertrang (Trust for Governors Island) and representatives of West8, a Dutch architectural bureau proposing a plan for a second park on Governors Island.
As Delta Commissioner, Wim Kuijken is responsible for overseeing the annual Delta program and budget in the Netherlands. This program is designed to protect the land and its people against flooding and to protect the Netherlands’ supply of freshwater. During the trip the Commissioner and Chris Ward will be available for the press.
